Turkish Dessert with Yogurt, Honey and Figs Recipe
Creamy yogurt, sweet honey and soft figs create a dessert that looks elegant yet comes together in just a few minutes. In Turkey, combinations of dairy with fruit and nuts are very popular after lunch, as they’re lighter than rich cakes. In terms of flavor, it’s somewhere between Greek yogurt with honey and an Italian ricotta dessert, but with a distinct fig accent.
This dessert combines the simplicity of everyday ingredients with the elegance of layered presentation. It draws on Turkish traditions of pairing dairy with fruit and nuts, giving you a light, refreshing alternative to heavy cakes that still feels indulgent thanks to the honey and figs.
Chef's tips
Use thick, full-fat yogurt (Greek-style works very well) so the layers hold their shape and the dessert feels creamy and luxurious. Lightly toasting the walnuts is worth the extra minute – it deepens their flavor and adds a pleasant crunch. Taste the yogurt mixture before layering and adjust the sweetness or spice level to your liking.
How to serve
Serve well-chilled, ideally in small glasses or stemmed dessert bowls. For a more festive look, finish with a tiny extra pinch of cinnamon or a few lemon zest strands on top. This dessert pairs nicely with strong, unsweetened coffee or black tea to balance the sweetness of the honey and figs.
Ingredients
- yogurt - 500 g
- figs - 6 pieces
- honey - 3 tablespoons
- walnuts - 40 g
- cinnamon - 0.25 teaspoons
- lemon zest - 0.5 teaspoons
Preparation
- Roughly chop the walnuts with a knife, place them in a dry pan and toast for 2–3 minutes over medium heat, shaking the pan often, until they are lightly golden and fragrant; set aside to cool.
- Wash the figs, pat them dry and cut into quarters or eighths, depending on the size of the fruit.
- Transfer the yogurt to a bowl, add half of the honey, the cinnamon and the grated lemon zest, and mix thoroughly with a spoon until everything is well combined.
- Prepare 4 dessert glasses or bowls; spoon 2–3 tablespoons of yogurt into the bottom of each.
- Add some of the chopped figs on top of the yogurt and sprinkle with a few walnuts.
- Repeat the layers until you use up all the ingredients, finishing with a layer of figs and walnuts on top.
- Drizzle the remaining honey in a thin stream over the tops of the desserts.
- Chill the desserts in the fridge for 10–15 minutes so they cool slightly and the flavors meld, then serve.
Storage
Deser najlepiej smakuje tego samego dnia, ale możesz go przechować w lodówce do 2 dni, przykryty folią; figi mogą lekko puścić sok, ale smak pozostanie dobry.
