Lemon-Mint Lemonade with Ice, American Style Recipe
Homemade lemonade in the USA is associated with kids’ summer stands in front of their houses and backyard barbecues. This version is intensely lemony, lightly sweet and refreshing thanks to mint. It’s made from simple ingredients but tastes completely different from store-bought bottled drinks.

Ingredients
- lemon - 6 pieces
- sugar - 150 g
- water hot - 250 ml
- water cold - 1000 ml
- mint - 10 sprigs
- ice - 300 g
- salt - 1 pinch
Main Ingredient:
lemon
Preparation
- Scrub the lemons thoroughly in warm water, dry them, finely grate the zest from 1 lemon (only the yellow part), then cut all the lemons in half and squeeze out the juice, removing the seeds.
- Put the sugar into a bowl, add the grated lemon zest and pour over the hot water. Stir for 1–2 minutes, until the sugar has completely dissolved. You’ll have a sweet syrup.
- Pour the lemon juice into a large jug, add the prepared sugar syrup and a pinch of salt to boost the lemon flavour.
- Add the cold water to the jug, stir and taste. If the lemonade is too sour, add a bit more sugar or honey and stir until dissolved.
- Lightly crush the mint sprigs in your hands to release their aroma and add them to the jug. Add the ice cubes, stir and leave for 5–10 minutes so the flavours can meld.
- Serve in glasses filled with ice, with a slice of lemon on the rim and mint leaves inside.
Storage
In fridge:
2 days
Freezing:
Yes
Store leftover lemonade in the fridge for up to 2 days. Remove the mint if you’re keeping it longer than a few hours so it doesn’t become bitter. Stir well before serving again and refresh with new ice.
