Baked Honey Mustard Chicken Wings American Style Recipe

In the US, wings are a must-have snack for games and house parties, but they don’t always have to be as spicy as Buffalo wings. This version is milder: a sweet-and-salty glaze made from honey and mustard creates a sticky, glossy skin that’s hard to stop licking. Everything is baked in the oven, so there’s less mess than with frying.

These wings combine classic American “game day food” style with the Polish love of roast chicken: they’re deeply caramelized, sweet-salty and gently spicy, but without the burning heat of Buffalo wings. Honey and mustard create a sticky, glossy glaze, while soy sauce adds a punch of umami, so the wings taste like something off a US bar menu – only straight from the oven. It’s the kind of snack that makes it really hard to stop, especially when there’s a bowl on the table for discarded bones and it suddenly turns out it’s full.

Chef's tips

Make sure the wings are really well dried before marinating – that way the skin roasts and caramelizes instead of steaming. If your wings are larger, add 5–10 minutes of baking time and watch the edges: they should be deeply golden and slightly charred, but not black. Be careful not to overdo the honey – too thick a layer can burn more quickly, so switch on the grill/broil only at the very end and check the oven every 1–2 minutes.

How to serve

Serve them with crispy oven fries or a simple coleslaw – just like in American sports bars. To drink, a cold lager or IPA is perfect, and for a non-alcoholic option, homemade lemonade with lemon and mint. This dish is a hit for NFL or NBA game nights, but also for relaxed Friday get-togethers with friends, when everyone eats with their hands and no one pretends to be fancy.

Ingredients

  • chicken wings - 1 kg
  • honey - 4 tablespoons
  • mustard - 2 tablespoons
  • soy sauce - 2 tablespoons
  • vegetable oil - 2 tablespoons
  • garlic - 3 piece
  • sweet paprika - 1 teaspoon
  • black pepper - 0.5 teaspoons
  • salt - 0.5 teaspoons
  • chili flakes - 0.25 teaspoons
  • chives - 2 tablespoons
Main Ingredient: chicken

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (top and bottom heat). Line a baking tray with baking paper or aluminum foil to make cleanup easier.
  2. Rinse the wings, pat them very dry with paper towels and, if needed, cut into smaller pieces, trimming off the very thin tips.
  3. In a large bowl, mix together the honey, mustard, soy sauce, oil, finely grated garlic, sweet paprika, pepper, salt and chili flakes. Stir until you get a smooth, thick marinade.
  4. Add the wings to the bowl with the marinade and coat each one thoroughly, preferably using your hands. Set aside for at least 15 minutes at room temperature; if you have time, you can refrigerate them for 1–2 hours.
  5. Arrange the wings on the tray in a single layer, skin side up, leaving small gaps between them. Spread any remaining marinade from the bowl over the tops of the wings.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the skin is deeply golden and slightly charred on the edges. Halfway through baking you can flip the wings and baste them with the juices from the tray, and for the last 5 minutes turn on the grill/broil function so the skin becomes even crispier.
  7. After taking the wings out of the oven, sprinkle with chopped chives and rest for 5 minutes before serving so the juices in the meat can settle.

Storage

In fridge: 3 days
Freezing: Yes

Przechowuj w lodówce w szczelnym pojemniku i odgrzewaj w 180°C przez 10–15 minut, aby skórka znów lekko się przypiekła. Możesz też zamrozić upieczone skrzydełka i odgrzać je bez rozmrażania w nieco niższej temperaturze, wydłużając czas o kilka minut.
