Grilled cheese – American pan-fried cheese sandwich Recipe
Grilled cheese is a simple yet very satisfying sandwich with melted cheese, fried in butter in a pan. In the USA it’s often served to children as a quick lunch, usually with tomato soup. It’s a bit like a Polish open-faced baked sandwich, only closed and much more buttery.

Ingredients
- toast bread - 4 slice
- yellow cheese - 80 g
- butter - 30 g
- mustard - 1 teaspoon
- pepper - 1 pinch
Main Ingredient:
yellow cheese
Preparation
- Lay the slices of bread out on a board. On one side of each slice, spread a thin layer of soft butter – this will be the outside of the sandwich.
- Turn two slices butter-side down. Place slices of cheese on top so they cover almost the entire surface.
- If you like a more pronounced flavor, spread a thin layer of mustard over the cheese and sprinkle with a pinch of pepper.
- Cover each sandwich with the second slice of bread, butter on the outside.
- Heat a pan over medium heat. Place the sandwiches in the pan and fry for 3–4 minutes on one side, gently pressing down with a spatula, until the bread is golden and crispy.
- Flip the sandwiches and fry for another 2–3 minutes, until the cheese inside is completely melted – you can slightly lift one slice to peek inside.
- If the bread is browning too quickly, lower the heat so the cheese has time to melt without the crust burning.
- Remove the finished sandwiches from the pan, wait 1–2 minutes so the cheese is no longer boiling hot, then cut diagonally into triangles.
Storage
In fridge:
1 days
Freezing:
No
