American-Style Breakfast Toast with Egg in a Hole Recipe
Toast with an egg in the middle of the slice is a classic American movie breakfast – simple, eye-catching and ready in a few minutes. In the USA it’s often made for kids on weekends, cutting hearts or stars out of the bread. It tastes like a mix of toast and a fried egg, but you can conveniently eat it with your hands.

Ingredients
- toast bread - 4 slice
- eggs - 4 piece
- butter - 20 g
- cheese - 2 slices
- chives chopped - 1 tablespoon
- salt
- black pepper freshly ground
Main Ingredient:
eggs
Preparation
- Place each slice of bread on a board and use a glass or cookie cutter to cut a round hole in the center (keep the cut-out centers).
- Heat half of the butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add 2 slices of bread and the 2 cut-out centers and fry for 1–2 minutes, until the bottom is lightly golden.
- Flip the bread to the other side. Carefully crack one egg into each hole, trying not to break the yolk.
- Fry for 3–4 minutes over medium heat, until the white starts to set from the bottom. If you like a firmer yolk, cover the pan with a lid for the last minute.
- Season the eggs with salt and pepper. Place half a slice of cheese on each finished slice of toast so it melts slightly from the heat.
- Sprinkle everything with chopped chives. Repeat with the remaining slices of bread and eggs, using the rest of the butter.
Storage
In fridge:
1 days
Freezing:
No
These toasts are best eaten immediately after frying; if you reheat them later, the bread will lose its crispness and the egg may become overcooked.
